christinalow@thestar.com.myEIGHT B-Boy groups gave their all in the finals of the inaugural Impression Cup BBoy Battle 2010 at 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya recently.
The teams arrived hours before the competition kicked off and wasted no time warming up before the contest kicked off at 6.30pm with an open floor cypher session.
Each team, which comprised two to a maximum of eight crew members, took to the stage with a short preview before the actual battle began.
The dance crews were Giller Battle Crew, Cyphers Kingz, Famous Crew, Syko Breakers, Under Age Killer, Force 136, Project Elements and South Side.
They were judged closely by international judges Kid David from US, Indonesia’s Kreate and Thailand’s Cheno on their footwork and skills.
After three hours of competition, the judges selected Giller Battle Crew as the winner. They pocketed RM10,000 and a trophy while runners-up Cypherz Kingz took home RM5,000. The third and fourth placing went to Famous Crew and Under Age Killer who received RM3,000 and RM2,000, respectively.
Besides the dance crews, three Malaysian performers MC Syze, Reefa and Shawn Lee also took time to entertain the crowd during the competition.
“Break dancing or BBoying is still fairly new in the country, there may be some older crews that had been performing for some time now, but the new ones do not really know where to start and how to get on from there,

“New performers usually dance among their friends without having any guidance on where they can compete,” Exquisite Impression project director Ramesh M. Gesan said.
He added that the competition was also an initiative to attract more school-going children and young adults to have a choice of activities that they could participate in during their free time, especially on weekends.
The competition was also an attempt to create a national competition for Malaysia where the winner would go on to represent the country in the World Impression Cup which will be held later this year in KL. The winner will be crowned the World Champion.
Gesan said popular dance crews from America, Japan and Australia would also be competing for the title.
